Labour Force Survey, May 2023 (Statistics Canada)

Overall employment was little changed in May, as employment fell by 77,000 (-2.8%) for youth aged 15 to 24, and it increased by 63,000 (+0.5%) among people aged 25 to 54. The unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 5.2% – the first increase since August 2022.

Voices of Indigenous Youth Leaders on Reconciliation: Bridging Study and Work for Long-term Success (Deloitte)

With efforts toward reconciliation beginning to be made by organizations in both the public and private sectors, businesses and higher-learning institutions are starting to see the unique value that Indigenous youth offer to advancing academic discourse and unique perspectives in the workplace. But progress remains slow going: these young people continue to face systemic barriers on their path to academic and career success.

Canada’s Welfare Wall: Enhancing the CWB [Canada Workers Benefit] for Full-Time Employment (Montreal Economic Institute)

The Canada Workers Benefit is a federal subsidy program that supports low-income workers through a refundable tax credit. Under the 2022 configuration, the subsidy is almost entirely phased out for full-time minimum wage earners. This creates a barrier to pursuing full-time work and achieving self-reliance, and thus to forging a career path.

A framework for nonprofit data strategies (Ontario Nonprofit Network)

The report provides an overview of the complexities, challenges and opportunities on how the non-profit sector – bolstered by investment and support from other stakeholders – can make the best use of its data, to develop better outcomes for communities across Ontario.
