Federal funding and supports for retraining in Canada

The rising cost of living has prompted some to consider alternate career pathways, while others have been forced into job search or career change due to layoffs. It’s important for career professionals to be aware of training programs and funding opportunities that can support clients’ ongoing skills development.

Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit (AJCTC)

Under the AJCTC, employers can claim up to $2,000 per year for each eligible apprentice. An eligible apprentice is someone working in a Red Seal Trade. Red Seal Trades are designated trades governed by provincial and territorial apprenticeship laws, such as appliance service technician, ironworker and tower crane operator.

Canada Apprentice Loan

The Canada Apprentice Loan offers up to $4,000 in interest-free loans per period of technical training. Applicants can use the money to help pay for tuition, tools, equipment and living expenses, to cover forgone wages or to help support their family.

Canada Retraining and Opportunities Initiative (CROI)

The Canada Retraining and Opportunities Initiative (CROI) supports workforce planning and skills training in communities significantly impacted by a mass layoff. It provides funding for community-based projects that help workers develop the skills they need to transition to new jobs.

Canada training credit (CTC)

The Canada training credit (CTC) is a refundable tax credit, available to help Canadians with the cost of eligible training fees. Individuals can claim the CTC for tuition and other fees paid for courses that they took in the year.

Employment Insurance (EI) and courses or training programs

Foreign Credential Recognition Program (FCRP)

The Foreign Credential Recognition Program (FCRP) supports foreign credential recognition in Canada. Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) Program

This program provides funding to Indigenous service delivery organizations that design and deliver job training services across First Nations, Inuit, Métis and urban/non-affiliated Indigenous people in their communities.

Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities

This program supports a wide range of programs and services, including job search supports, pre-employability services, wage subsidies, work placements and employer awareness initiatives to encourage employers to hire persons with disabilities.

Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program (SWSP)

The Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program (SWSP) supports key sectors by funding projects that include training and reskilling, attracting and retaining skilled workforce, assisting equity-deserving groups in finding work, and providing creative solutions and tools to address sectoral labour market needs.
