Canada’s latest job numbers show many people are struggling to find work, with young people in particular facing an uphill battle amid Canada’s “worst youth unemployment rate in decades,” outside of the pandemic.  

Regardless if you are trying to find your first job or seeking to make a change, job hunting can be an exhausting process. Even when you feel like you’re applying best practices – like networking with intentionality and tailoring applications to the employer – progress can feel slow or non-existent.  

If you or your clients feel like you need to bring some fresh life into your job search strategy, this article shares a roundup of unconventional job search strategies that might not be on your radar. Indeed says “it’s important to use creative ways to find a job because it can help you stand out in the hiring process.” Offering 12 ideas, the article suggests jobseekers can consider creating a video or infographic resume rather than the traditional document to stand out. Other ideas are visiting a company in person, asking for referrals and searching for companies rather than jobs to identify similar values. 

Think Outside the Box: 7 Unconventional Tips for Job Search (TalentAdore) 

Among its tips, TalentAdore advises jobseekers to spend time developing and leveraging a personal brand by harnessing social media to strengthen their online presence, giving a boost to networking efforts.  

Try These 6 Unique Job Search Tactics for Job Search Success (FlexJobs) 

FlexJobs has six unique job search tactics jobseekers can try. For more creative fields, FlexJobs says to create a presentation or a portfolio of your work rather than relying solely on a resume. This ties in with their third tactic, which is to show an employer why you are the right candidate. For example, “use your own social media channels to connect and show how you can boost their numbers.” 

Unconventional Job Search Hacks That Work, with Nissar Ahamed (Mac’s List) [Podcast] 

Featured guest Nissar Ahamed of Career Metis, an  online community for jobseekers, shares his unconventional job search hacks with U.S.-based job board Mac’s List. Some of Ahamed’s recommendations are to spend significant time researching the market, companies and industry trends before applying to give yourself an edge in interviews, reach out directly to leaders at companies for coffee conversations, and take proactive steps such as direct outreach and creating your own content.
