Reflection is a vital part of setting career goals. This practice is valuable for career professionals reflecting on their own careers, and for practitioners supporting their clients or students. In the spirit of new beginnings, here are practical resources to aid in meaningful career reflection.  

Career development in uncertain times: Questions for self-exploration (CareerWise) [Article] 

Career development is a lifelong process that requires ongoing self-awareness, exploration and growth. By fostering this mindset, clients can take control of their careers, regardless of external circumstances. This article highlights self-exploration as a key element of career development, and lists questions for self-exploration. 

CPD for the Career Development Professional: A Handbook for Enhancing Practice (Siobhan Neary and Claire Johnson) [Handbook] 

This chapter of the handbook covers what reflective practice is, how it enhances professional practice and various models. It is valuable for anyone studying career development or practitioners at any stage who want to refresh their understanding of reflective practice. 

Reflective Practice Workbook (NSW Government, Clinical Excellence Commission) [Worksheets] 

Although designed for health-care providers in Australia, career professionals in Canada can adapt the concepts from this resource for their own reflective practice. Key sections include a reflective cycle on page 13, core capabilities on page 22 and a guide to running a reflective practice session on page 26. Page 35 features tip sheets on topics like building a reflective practice mindset and emotional regulation.

Geared toward early childhood educators, this resource provides a comprehensive overview of reflective practice, which includes a definition, benefits, steps, strategies and implementation tips, plus free downloadable resources.  

Reflective Practice on Experiential Learning, and how to Unlock its Career Development Value: Maker’s audit & guide (CERIC) [Guide]  

OneLifeTools created this CERIC-supported guide for anyone designing, implementing or wanting to improve experiential learning. It is a companion to the Wayfinder site – a catalogue of reflective practice resources to enhance career development within experiential learning 

Page 7 of the guide has questions to aid in integrating best practices into reflective practice of career practitioners. Page 9 has example questions and prompts that users can integrate or adapt to unlock career development value in reflective practice.
