 Portfolio careerists hold a combination of full-time or part-time work, self-employment, freelance jobs, board positions or other projects. They leverage a diverse skillset to work in various industries. This non-traditional career approach fosters the pursuit of multiple streams of income amid the prevalence of hybrid and remote work, and the rising cost of living. Here are resources that career professionals can use to support clients looking to build portfolio careers. 

Building A Portfolio Career & Quitting My 9-5 Job (nicklafferty.com) [Blog] 

Nick Lafferty is a portfolio careerist who works as a paid-ads consultant, marketer, writer and podcast host. He shares his experience of pursuing self-employment and solopreneurship after leaving his job in May 2023. He covers the pros and cons of this non-traditional approach and tips on how to get started. 

How to build a portfolio career (Advisory Board Centre) [Article] 

This resource is geared toward executives considering a portfolio career. Along with defining what it is, readers will find steps on how to transition from a full-time role to part-time employment, board directorships, consulting work, advisory roles or other project-based work. 

How to manage a portfolio career (Squiggly Careers) [Podcast] 

Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis are co-founders of Amazing If, a company that aims to make the pursuit of non-linear career trajectories better for everyone. They authored two Sunday Times bestsellers, The Squiggly Career and You Coach You. They also offered insights in a TEDx talk, “The best career path isn’t always a straight line.” In this podcast episode, they talk about portfolio careers as a way to gain more flexibility and freedom, increase career resilience and strengths. They share practical ideas for action including portfolio plotting, planning patterns and balancing risk versus reliability. Leaving the ladder behind: Strategies to craft portfolio careers (CareerWise) [Article] 

Gail Kastning is a Certified Career Strategist. She is a portfolio careerist who streams income from consulting, contracting, coaching, speaking, passive income and rental property. In this piece, Gail shares examples of three successful portfolio career strategies her clients used. Namely: multiple part-time jobs, self-employed independent work, and combining a full-time job with a side hustle.  

Gail’s company, Purposeful Careers, offers a range of resources to support portfolio workers, from to podcasts, to workshops. 

Portfolio Careers: How to optimise and manage them (University of Oxford) [Workbook] 

This workbook was designed to help people think through the practicalities of establishing a portfolio of professional activities, and strategies to maintain and grow their preferred portfolio. It aims to help readers make informed choices, play to their strengths, and increase their chances of success and fulfilment.  

The Portfolio Collective [Website resources] 

The Portfolio Collective was formed in July 2020 at the peak of the pandemic to bring together a diverse mix of portfolio professionals in the world. They aim to help portfolio careerists develop the connections and skills to be successful solopreneurs. Their resources include podcasts, paid courses and articles, such as platforms for finding work or learning opportunities. They are also holding a portfolio career festival in London, U.K., on November 13, 2024.  

The Portfolio Life: How to Future-Proof Your Career, Avoid Burnout, and Build a Life Bigger Than Your Business Card (Christina Wallace) [Book] 

In The Portfolio Life, Christina Wallace, a Harvard professor and serial entrepreneur, explores proven techniques from successful entrepreneurs, creatives and freelancers to help readers embrace the freedom of building a flexible, fulfilling and sustainable life. Three tenets of this approach are: people are more than any one role or opportunity; diversification will help navigate change and mitigate uncertainty; and when (not if) people’s needs change, they can and should rebalance.
