In each issue of our CareerWise Weekly newsletter, we share a selection of curated articles to help you stay up to date on all things career – from labour market information, to job search strategies, to workplace trends. This year, we saw keen interest in AI-related topics as ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools exploded in popularity. Readers were also keen to keep up on the ever-evolving labour market as many companies undertook layoffs and recession fears loomed. Here, we count down the top 10 most-read articles from our 2023 newsletters.

Research from the World Economic Forum anticipates 14 million jobs will be lost in the next five years. The roles expected to see the greatest decline include bank tellers, postal service clerks, cashiers and ticket clerks, and administrative and executive secretaries.

They spend time networking, CV and cover letter writing, interviewing, following up and getting their hopes up – only for companies to send a curt rejection or not reply at all. Then, they must start again.

Many companies are now asking – or telling – employees to come back to the office, at least part-time. But many workers are reluctant. Experts say after the major shift in work culture prompted by the pandemic, employers on the whole aren’t approaching hybrid work in a way that makes sense for their workers or their businesses.

Amid the rise of AI and freelance work, and given changes in how people work, tips for jobseekers to optimize their job search documents and stay relevant.

Recession concerns loomed throughout 2023. The August jobs report from Statistics Canada suggested the lower job-changing rate might indicate the labour market had become less favourable to workers seeking new opportunities.

This article urged jobseekers to capitalize on an anticipated rebound in hiring (following a summer slowdown) by getting their job search documents in order and reaching out to their networks.
