People living in rural and remote communities face unique challenges in their career development, from limited access to resources and funding, to shifting economic conditions. Here are resources to help career professionals support clients residing in rural and remote areas.

Diversity Disconnect (Free Rein Associates partnered with Life Strategies Ltd.) [Report and podcast]

Employers across Canada report serious challenges with hiring and maintaining workers. This is especially true in rural communities. Yet the unemployment rates for underrepresented groups — such as Indigenous Peoples and persons with disabling conditions — remain high. This research investigates the factors helping and hindering the employment success of such groups. The research team also shares their findings in a podcast. Insights from Cassie Taylor and Dr. Roberta Borgen, who presented at CERIC’s Cannexus25, are also featured in CareerWise.

Examining the Outcomes of Zero-Fee Education in Building a Resilient, Inclusive Economy in Rural Alberta (Future Skills Centre) [Research]

This project aimed to provide free training to underserved populations and build resilience among workers in the community through skills acquisition amid ongoing economic transformation and uncertainty.

Igniting intentionality: Career development strategies for remote workers (CareerWise) [Article]

Michelle Schafer, an ICF-certified coach and facilitator, shares several ways that career professionals can prepare themselves to support workers. This includes doing research, offering virtual career development supports and resources, along with making space for reflection.

Refocusing the Urban Lens for Rural and Remote Employment Services (ASPECT BC) [Report]

This report includes insight from 176 rural, remote and Indigenous communities involved with ASPECT BC’s rural and remote advisory committee. It is a record of the challenges facing rural and remote employment service providers and a comprehensive list of solutions that policymakers and funders can implement.

Rural workforce development (Careering) [Magazine]

The Spring-Summer 2020 issue of Careering magazine highlights “Rural Workforce Development.” As a collaborative edition between CERIC and the National Career Development Association, it has articles from both sides of the border exploring creative solutions to labour shortages, the challenges of unequal broadband access, how to ensure the viability of the agriculture industry, trends in rural workforce development and much more. Several articles also analyze the impacts of COVID-19.
